Shocking story of dog brutality

Posted October 29th, 2009

I was totally shocked today to read ofApril alderton who had her puppy kicked to death by a gang of yobs in Cambridge U.K.  She wasw given the puppy - Sandy, a Jack Russell - to help her with her ADD problems.  This is another example a broken Britain - we can be sure that the thugs who harmed Sandy will get away with a slap on the wrist - shameful!!

Please to remember the 5th of November…

Posted October 22nd, 2009

Gunpowder, treason and a very nervous dog!  Yup, fireworks are here again and dogs will once again crawl behind sofas and howl.  So here are a few seasonal tips:  Bach Rescue remedy  - in the run up to the big night put a few drops in your dog’s water every day to build a sense of calm.  You could also try Dorwest Scullcap and Valerian tablets which sound like a witch’s brew but do apparently work well on dogs that get very excitable and nervous.

Pixar fantasy and Poole reality

Posted October 19th, 2009

Ihad an unexpected canine experience yesterday when I went to see the film ‘UP’ in 3D at the London Imax.  Pixar really knows how to create dogs.  The animation of the talking dogs was quite extraordinary presenting a range of canine characters from the friendly to the fearsome.  For me, the winning moment was when the dogs rushed off chasing a ball - it was so ‘doglike’ - and had so much understanding for the doggie spirit.

I noticed that there is a pedigree show in Shepton Malet this coming weekend for Poole Canine Society which I will try to visit.  The pleasant autumn weather won’t last forever so I want to take advantage of that and visit as many shows as possible before Xmas.

Brave dogs and interesting breeds

Posted October 15th, 2009

Monster, the barking dog, pulled off a stunt worthy of Rin-Tin-Tin when he saved his owners from a terrible fire by raising the alarm so a big bravo to him!

I’ve been chilling out on the eurobichons forum this last week - they are a lovely bunch of people with some of the smiliest dogs I’ve ever seen.  I really enjoy visiting specialised dog forums - I have been checking out the  British Heritage forum too.  Before we started wagger.co.uk I couldnt justify spending my working day chatting with dog enthusiasts.  Nowadays I can have fun with a clear conscience, I love learning more about breeds and I don’t mean KC breed standards I mean the spirit of breeds.  I am not interested on the perfection of line or the ear placement - I leave that to specialists - I like to read what ordinary owners think about their labradoodle or their mini-pom - what makes that breed so lovable or gutsy.  So when I blog about dogs it will be with this perspective.  I hope that you as a wagger user will like that approach.

What a great day for wagger.co.uk !   We are plugged by Carol Vorderman in her column in Reveal magazine   and then we had a few minutes of glory on LBC radio with Jeni Barnett discussing Pets and Therapy especially the amazing Baxter.  This got us a whole batch of new registrations from all over the country.  This is a double-woof day!!

Prince Phillip fails to strike black gold

Posted October 7th, 2009

In spite of having imported a container load of specially truffle - impregnated oak trees to Sandringham his highly talented team of Lagotto Romagnolo hounds were unable to sniff out any truffles for the royal family.  These amazing dogs who have been trained for generations to sniff out pungent truffles called it a day on Phillip’s truffle orchard.   I am seriously thinking we should set up a wagger network for Lagotto Romagnolos so they can compare truffle sniffing techniques in France and Italy.
